  • Passing the CBEST
There is no limit to the number of times you may take any or all sections of the CBEST in order to pass. You do not have to pass all three sections at the same time. For all purposes, individuals only need to pass the CBEST once.

The passing score on each section of the test is a scaled score of 41. A total scaled score (the sum of reading, mathematics, and writing scaled scores) of 123 is required to pass. However, it is possible to pass the CBEST with a scaled score as low as 37, on one or two sections, provided that the total score is 123 or higher. It is not possible to pass the CBEST if any section score is below 37, regardless of how high the total score may be.

Although all test forms of the CBEST measure the same basic skills, each test form contains different questions. Since one test form may be slightly more difficult or slightly easier than another, it is necessary to convert the raw score (calculated by summing the number of questions answered correctly) to a scale that takes into account differences in the difficulty of test questions. In this way, scaled scores for each form will represent essentially the same level of basic skill mastery.
